Pa’ia’s 16th Annual Beachfest Bodyboard and Surf Competition was last Saturday and what a great day for it! North shore coastline was booming with great waves and beautiful sunshine for this fun event. Athletes of all ages showed off their skills, tricks and barrel-riding abilities. The PYCC Webcam was available to monitor the waves and action throughout the event.
The competition was divided into divisions – Menehune (ages 9-14), Junior Men (ages 15-17), Women (all ages) and Men (all ages), Drop Knee (all ages), and Free Surfing (all ages) – the focus today being on Menehune and Juniors. The event started with a 7am registration and 8am heat start. To encourage all participation, the event fees were kept at $20/$30 and included lunch and an event t-shirt.
Announcers and Event Coordinators worked seamlessly together to create an outstanding event for contestants and observing families. Sunset welcomes the participants and winners in an award ceremony. Well done, again, PYCC!!
Since 1955, the PYCC, Pa’ia Youth Community Center, provides and promotes this highlight event each year to bring the community together to celebrate the skills of our youth. PYCC is located on the beachside and provided deejay music throughout the day, both on the beach and through their local radio station 88.9fm.
PYCC is an outstanding community-supported youth center providing a safe place to learn, play and grow for youth ages 9-21. They offer a host of organized entertainment 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, including video games, multimedia manipulation classes, computer lab, cooking classes, art classes, bodyboarding, on-air radio techniques, organized sports and a skate park. Youth are taught how to be responsible for their actions, respectful of each other and a contributing member of society.
Our kudos to PYCC for another outstanding year of BEACHFEST!
