Something Old Something New Something Borrowed Something Blue

That simple phrase can have so many meanings, like ~ how about… MUSIC? Something old Something new can mean:

Something Old – Tony Bennett
Something New – Karmin
Something Borrowed – Donna Summer’s music
Something Blue – Skip James

But most likely we’re talking about Weddings here…

As a Maui Wedding Photographer I try to capture those 4 sentiments in an artistic way. Can you imagine receiving an individual picture of each of those items? What would you do with those pictures? Would they ever make it into your wedding album? I doubt it. We enjoy hearing the story behind your special items. You should definitely have something to remember the thought that went into this old but unforgettable bridal custom.

The bridal tradition of “Something old Something New Something Borrowed Something Blue” originated in 1898 out of an English folklore. The tradition was started as a way of blessing the bride to keep her from being baron. Typically the “Something borrowed”, was something borrowed from a woman that had been blessed with fertility.

The rhyme actually continued on one lyric longer than present day bridal traditions:

Something Old
Something New
Something Borrowed
Something Blue
and a Silver Sixpence in her Shoes

Some sources say that this tradition started as early as 1871 with references from other folklore and stories of similar superstitions…

So for more than a hundred years, brides around the world have incorporated into their celebrations, sentimental items from special people in their lives under this pretense. If you were to ask most brides, they wouldn’t know where it started… but ask them if they’d get married without those items and their answers may surprise you. This is definitely one tradition that won’t be tossed aside, even if you haven’t read Bye-gones, Relating to Wales and the Border Counties.
